The day 9th of Wimbledon 2016 was dedicated to the women’s draw with the first round of quarter-finals in this year’s Wimbledon starting in the women’s draw and subsequently the men’s draw is to follow a day later.

Taking court on this hugely vital day were the William sisters – Venus coming back to a Wimbledon semi-final after a few years of hardships on the grass court and majors – grand slam tallies have been missing from her career in the last few years which otherwise has been an illustrious career. The highest seed in the quarter-final remained Serena Williams who was eyeing yet another Wimbledon glory (with her being the defending champion). Following her were no.4 seed in Kerber and no.5 seed Halep – who were set to take on each other.

Venus Williams vs Yaroslava Shvedova

Five-time Wimbledon champion in Venus Williams (ranked 8th in the world) took the court to face Shvedova from Kazakhstan, ranked 96 in the world. Venus last major title happens to be Wimbledon in the year 2008 – since which she has had a very forgettable tour in the tennis circuit.

Venus for the first time in seven years has reached the Wimbledon semi-final with a 7-6 (5) 6-2 win over her opponent. She was visibly ecstatic after the win and it’s fair to assess that this is the best that she has played in the last few years – the serve is going down well, the backhand is strong and passing winners are achievable for Venus – she perhaps is the most major threat to her sister in Serena.

Angelique Kerber vs Simona Halep – no.4 vs no.5

This year’s Australian Open champion in Angelique Kerber took on an opponent quite tricky on the grass court i.e. Simona Halep. While Kerber is ranked 4th in the world, Halep is ranked 5th. As expected and in accordance to their seeding, the match turned out to be an exhilarating contest with both the players going neck and neck.

Kerber just managed to push ahead to the victory with a 7-5 7-6 (2) victory over Halep, who was foreseen as one of the possible title contenders this year but is now ousted from the tournament. Kerber will now face Venus Williams in the semi-final.

Dominika Cibulkova vs Elena Vesnina

The Slovak 19th seed in Cibulkova lost to the Russian Vesnina (someone who just a few years back was women’s doubles partner of Sania Mirza). Vesnina prior to this year’s Wimbledon had never madeit to the semi-finals of a major but that was to be changed.

Coming into the match, Cibulkova started as favorite having beaten Radwanszka in her last clash in round 16 but Vesnina’s passing winners just left everyone in awe of her improved play. The match turned out to be a one-sided affair with Vesnina thrashing the Slovak tennis player 6-2 6-2 to reach the Wimbledon semi-final.

Serena Williams vs Anastasia Pavlyunchenkova

Serena Williams faced the 21 seed Pavlyuchenkova, yet another Russian tennis star whose making amends in the international tennis circuit.

The Russian however succumbed to the pressure of a Wimbledon quarter-final and playing against perhaps the strongest woman tennis player that there currently is; she posed no threats to Serena’s contention for the Wimbledon semi’s.

An easy 6-4 6-4 victory came the way of Serena, who looks the strongest contender to seize the title, yet again. In her way will be Vesnina but will she be able to change the faith of Serena – whose perhaps playing some of the best tennis in her life!
