There are some days for a team wherein everything starts to go right – players tend to get a “midas” kind of a touch and whatever the team does turns gold literarily. Similarly, there are days for a team wherein everything goes from bad to worse, nothing seems to work and it becomes only fair to label it “a bad day at the office”. Surprisingly, we had a match in IPL 2016 wherein both the situations came alive as RCB had a day wherein nothing seemed to go wrong and Gujarat Lions had a day wherein nothing went right.

Royal Challengers Bangalore won by 144 runs

Gujarat Lions won the toss and opted to bowl first; they had no inkling of what was coming their way

Having won the toss and opted to bowl, Gujarat Lions needed just 1 win to secure their playoffs birth and therefore this became a crucial match because you wouldn’t want to leave it till the end. Little did they know; today was going to be a day of absolute hammering for their bowlers – courtesy of AB De Villiers and Virat Kohli.

Getting Gayle out early, helped nought

Getting the danger man in Gayle out early, the Gujarat Lions hoped that they could restrict RCB but till Kohli is in the middle; no team takes a breath of ease and when AB gets going, you ought to pray to god that he’s not in a brutal mood – which he was in this match.

Runs were raining

Staggering sixes, bulleting boundaries and fiery singles matched with equally quick doubles – the scoreboard was not walking but running at the speed of Bolt.

RCB scored 248/3

248/3 was the final score for RCB and to best summarize their batting – let’s just say, WOW! When the shot making gets going, AB and Kohli get going or is it the other way around? Well, whichever way it is – Kohli and AB is a deadly duo and with their presence at the pitch, one can always sense a big total on the board.

Kohli (109 off 55 balls), AB (129 in 52 balls)

Centuries for both the batsmen, 109 for Kohli in 55 balls and 129* in 52 for AB got the score close to 250, the question remained – does Gujarat has any chance? Even with RCB’s poor bowling!

Gujarat Lions had a collapse

With Raina missing this match due to birth of his daughter, the middle order for Gujarat looked weak but it was hard to imagine the kind of collapse that they had, maybe due to the absolute pounding that they received while bowling, the morale in the team went into tatters.

GL ended with 104

A mere 104 sums up the poor display of batting from the Lions who just didn’t roar today. 37 from Finch became the highest score of the innings which goes to show that none of the batsmen settled in to chase a mammoth score of 249.

4 wickets for Jordan and 3 for Chahal ended a great day’s work in the middle for RCB – perhaps the most clinical performance that they’ve given in all of this season. Their hopes of making the playoffs remain alive and with the kind of form that AB and Kohli showed today; one can only imagine what is to follow this thunderous performance – of course Gayle’s out of form but if he gets going, these BIG 3 can not just take RCB to playoffs but you never know, the trophy doesn’t look that distant.
